Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I submitted my application. What are the next steps?

A: One of the following will occur within 3 business days of submitting your application:
• If all required documents are submitted, you will receive a “Next Steps” email.
• If documents or identification are missing, you will receive an email requesting the required items. Once received, a “Next Steps” email will be sent.
• If your charge requires a case-by-case review or you requested accommodation, a member of Volunteer Services will contact you by phone.

Q: What court documents do I need to submit?

A: A list of required court documents is available in the requirements above. Submitting incomplete or incorrect forms may delay the processing of your hours.

Q: How do I receive my PIN number?

A: After completing your background check and signed orientation, you will receive an email titled “Goodwill – Ready to Start.” This email will include your PIN and instructions for beginning your service hours.

Q: I need accommodation. What should I do?

A: Please include details of any accommodation needs when submitting your application. A member of Volunteer Services will review your request and contact you to discuss available options before processing your application.

Q: Is there a set schedule? Who do I contact to set my hours?

A: No set schedule is required. Volunteer Services will coordinate with the store for your first day of service. After that, you may complete hours at any time the store is open, without scheduling in advance.

Q: How long can I volunteer in one day?

A: You may volunteer during the operating hours of the store you selected. Most Goodwill stores are open:
• Monday–Saturday: 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
• Sunday: 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

*If you volunteer more than 5 hours in a day, you must take a 30 minute unpaid break and clock out during that time.*

Q: What is the dress code?

A: Volunteers must follow the same dress code as Goodwill staff, which is outlined in your orientation. Key requirements include:
• Slip resistant shoes
• Shirts with sleeves
• Blue or black jeans or slacks (no leggings)
• No hats, printed shirts, or headphones
• Clothing must be properly fitted (no baggy or sagging clothing)

Q: Can I volunteer at multiple store locations?

A: No. You must complete all hours at one selected store location. If you need to change locations, please contact Volunteer Services at 1 888 539 3612 or email volunteers@goodwillcolorado.org to request a transfer.

Q: How do I complete the background check and orientation?

A: If all required documentation has been submitted and your charge is approved, you will receive both within 3 business days of applying:
• The background check is sent by a company called Verified First via email and text.
• The orientation is sent through Adobe Sign and can be reviewed and signed electronically on a computer or mobile device.
Once completed, both are automatically returned to Volunteer Services—no follow up email or call is required.

Q: How can I get a copy of my signed court documents?

A: Per policy, officially signed court documents and official hours reports can only be sent directly to the court or referring agency, not to the volunteer.
If you would like a detailed breakdown of your hours for your records, please email volunteers@goodwillcolorado.org or call 1 888 539 3612, and we will email you an official copy of your hour’s summary.

Q: How many hours have I completed so far?

A: You can view your completed hours at any time while you are in the store.
1. Sign in on the volunteer tablet.
2. Click “View Hours” before signing in or out.

*Please note: the hours displayed are a lifetime total, so any hours completed with us previously are included. Instructions on viewing hours will also be included in your “Ready to Start” email.

Q: What should I do if my PIN is no longer working?

A: First, check whether your community service deadline has passed. Your PIN is automatically deactivated the day after your court deadline.
If you believe this is an error, contact Volunteer Services at 1 888 539 3612 (Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.). We can verify your status.

*Please note: if this happens on a weekend or holiday, assistance will be available on the next business day.

Q: How do I get my court timesheet signed (since store management cannot sign court documents)?

A: Please email volunteers@goodwillcolorado.org or call 1 888 539 3612 and request that your hours be submitted to the court or referring agency.

Volunteer Services will automatically send your completed hours:
• On the first business day after you finish your hours, or
• On the next business day after your court ordered due date, whichever applies.

Q: I received an extension from the court or agency. What do I do?

A: Please email a copy of your approved extension to volunteers@goodwillcolorado.org. You will receive a confirmation email once the extension has been received. After confirmation, you may return to the store to begin or continue your hours.

If your extension is sent over a weekend or holiday, confirmation will be emailed on the next business day when Volunteer Services offices are open.

Q: The store tablet was not working, and I only signed in on the paper badge log. How do I make sure I receive credit for my hours?

A: Ask the store supervisor to email Volunteer Services with the hours you recorded on the badge log for the day the tablet was unavailable.

You may also send a follow up email to volunteers@goodwillcolorado.org to verify the hours were entered. You can check that your hours are up to date at any time using the store’s volunteer tablet.

Q: I signed in on the tablet but forgot to sign the paper badge log. What should I do?

A: Please notify a store supervisor. Let them know that you signed in on the tablet but forgot to sign the badge log.

The supervisor will:
1. Verify your hours using the “View Hours” feature on the tablet, and
2. Complete the badge log and initial it to prevent any discrepancies.
