Meet the Team: Sasha Gonzalez, Journeys Direct Support Professional
Sasha Gonzalez is a Direct Support Professional for Journeys at Goodwill and has been with Journeys for over 15 years. Journeys is a program for adults with disabilities who are medically fragile and may need hands-on assistance. Journeys creates an environment where clients can have fun, make friends, and learn how to have positive relationships.
As a Direct Support Professional, Sasha ensures all activities are running smoothly each day and the facility is safe and clean. In client interactions, Sasha helps clients reach their goals, like gross motor and fine motor activities, and encourages clients to have positive communication with each other. Sasha facilities activities like bingo, ball toss, Wii sports, cornhole, crafts, and parties.
“I do my best to offer clients a variety of activities.” Sasha says “I plan special treat days each month where clients enjoy a fun snack like chocolate milk shakes, banana split pudding cups, watermelon slushies and waffles. We have special party days with luaus, Special Olympics, and dress up themes.”
Sasha also makes sure clients are integrated in the community with special visits from local organizations including the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Let’s Dance Group, and Music with Tom.
Prior to joining Goodwill Sasha worked for a moving company. A friend recommended the Journeys’ Direct Support Professional role to Sasha, who was excited to join the Goodwill team and ensure clients are able to experience a variety of activities. Sasha’s favorite part of her job is seeing the clients having fun, become comfortable, and arrive to the program every day to participate and make friends. She looks forward to seeing Journeys serve more clients and continuing to make activities more exciting and fun for everyone.
