Practice self-care with luxurious fabrics – at affordable prices, thanks to Goodwill®

There’s something truly bittersweet that comes with the transition of seasons. You’re not quite ready to release your grip on the great memories and adventures that occurred during the previous season, but there’s still the thrill of change in the air – sometimes quite literally. Though I have a preference for the outdoors and sunshine, I do find something calming in the knowledge that there are a few months out of the year when everyone is essentially in hibernation, cozying up indoors with candles, blankets and homemade meals. And it’s not just me. Our culture is truly changing, and taking time for self-care and relaxation is becoming both a necessity and a luxury.

Whether you like to take the time to relax solo, or find solace in a group of good friends coming over for a casual night in, self-care is more than just slathering layers of cleanser and moisturizer on your face and gearing up for a bubble bath – though those are some great ways of treating yourself and relieving stress! Sometimes, self-care is all about being conscious in what you are putting in and on your body, and how you are choosing to spend your time. Take the time to embrace yourself with love and care and know that you can also show yourself the love and respect you deserve with the clothes and materials that you put on your body as well.

There’s something to be said about luxurious fabrics and textiles. Wrapping yourself in silk, cashmere or a super soft and fluffy fleece or chenille can have instant calming effects – sometimes, to the point of dozing off on the couch at 8 p.m. They also look luxurious, even for just wearing them around the house or apartment, one glance in the mirror can raise your sense of self confidence.

A lot of these materials also look great as apartment decorations, so you won’t need to worry about storage (especially if you’re working with a small apartment space like I am!) because you can casually drape the fluffy blanket over the couch, bed or chair to get a desired calming affect in your atmosphere. Clothes on the other hand, may need to find their own spot in your dresser or closet.

The downside to these materials is that when you shop at retail price (in department stores or boutiques) they are priced on the high-end and expensive luxury side of the price tag. BUT before you stop reading, there are ways to get these materials into your wardrobe at a highly discounted cost… think J.Crew 100% cashmere sweater for $5 type of cost! (Yes, this was a real find I had!) Your local Goodwill® has all of these treasures and more – I’ve found 100% silk blouses for $7 or less, and you can too. With the changing of the seasons, if you’re cleaning out your closet think about bringing some donations to Goodwill, and while you’re there, take a look around for some hidden luxury material gems. Your self-care routine will thank you!
