Empowering veteran and underserved farmers and ranchers of Colorado

Goodwill of Colorado’s FarmAble Program will assist veteran and socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers across Colorado with obtaining long term economic stability. This includes providing information and resources to farmers and ranchers through intensive workshops, training, and mentoring each year. FarmAble will assist participants with owning and operating successful farms and ranches, improve participation in USDA programs, build relationships between current and prospective farmers and ranchers with USDA’s offices, and introduce agriculture-related information to participants through training and technical assistance. The program will primarily serve military veterans and underserved farmers across Colorado, with a specific focus on Native Americans and other people of color in agriculture.

Empowering Rural Communities

Goodwill of Colorado’s FarmAble program, under the U.S. Department of Agriculture 2501 Grant, supports 58 rural counties, by providing essential resources to underserved and veteran farmers and ranchers. Through FarmAble participants will gain access to tools and knowledge to help make their farming endeavor more self sufficient and empower the communities to bridge the economic gaps that exist in the agricultural sector.

Veteran Support

FarmAble aims to support Colorado’s 8,100 veteran farmers and their significant contribution to agriculture and their potential to thrive in that sector. Veterans often encounter economic difficulties that hinder their success in rural communities. FarmAble is committed to addressing these challenges. Through tailored programs and trainings, veterans will learn the necessary skills to increase agricultural profitability, navigating Federal Farm Programs, and ensure veterans have the resources and opportunities needed to succeed and contribute within their communities.

Focus on the Ute Tribes

La Plata, Montezuma, and Archuleta counties will be focal points in the program, particularly with the Southern Ute Tribe and Ute Mountain Ute Tribe. FarmAble recognizes the disparities in these areas in agriculture, by offering one-on-one support through financial literacy and access to resources through the USDA, participants can improve their farming experience. FarmAble aims to strengthen the relationship between these areas and the USDA so that access to programs and loans can strengthen the agricultural production of these counties and provide economic support for the people of the Southern Ute Tribe and Ute Mountain Ute Tribe.
