HIDDEN TREASURES. CHANGED LIVES.
EXPLORING EVERY NEW DAY

EXPLORE NEW EXPERIENCES EACH DAY AT JOURNEYS

Goodwill’s Journeys program is designed for adult participants with disabilities who require daily supervision. Journeys offers a unique, safe and nurturing setting that provides sensory stimulation, calming activities and personal involvement. Participants will enjoy ultimate relaxation in our Snoezelen multisensory environment.

Journeys encourages participants to engage in community integration activities throughout the program week helping them connect with their local community in a safe and supervised setting. Individual choice and interests heavily factor into selecting daily activities, which may vary from touring the Olympic Training Center to enjoying coffee at a local restaurant to learning about our community and history while visiting a local museum.

Journeys’ Snoezelen Room

The term Snoezelen (SNOOzelen) is a combination of two Dutch words: snufflen (to sniff, seek out or explore) and doezelen (to relax). Developed in the 1970s by Dutch Therapists Jan Hulsegge and Ad Verheul, the Snoezelen concept incorporates specialized sensory equipment and materials that can be individually customized to blend sights, sounds, textures, aromas and motion to provide stimulation and calm the primary sensory systems.

Journey’s multi-sensory room helps participants with intellectual and developmental disabilities express choice and engage in a wide range of experiences with multiple benefits, including:

  • Physical Health
  • Increased Relaxation
  • Improved Attention and Memory
  • Reduction in “Excitable” Behavior
  • Increased Quality of Life

Journeys is staffed by a full-time Certified Nursing Assistant and an on-call RN, who makes weekly visits to the center. Goodwill’s CPR- and First Aid-trained staff also provide daily living activities, blood pressure checks, weight tracking and administration of medications for participants. Additionally, Journeys’ staff is well versed in integration techniques to enhance individual choice and participation, and our staff-to- participant ratio is typically 1:6.

All Journeys care providers undergo extensive background checks and screenings prior to their employment with Goodwill and these screening measures are conducted on an annual basis for each employee.
